Swiftwater Rescue Technician- Unit I

Gaston College will host a Swiftwater Rescue Technician Unit I class September 6, 8, 10 & 11 2005. Thisclass is open to all emergency services personnel interested in the state-of-the art response to emergencies. This involves flowing waters, flooding, control canals, low-head dams and situations with people and/or vehicles in water or anyone who has previously taken an SRT-I class and wishes to upgrade and re-certify their current SRT-I certification to the new NFPA compliant SRT-Unit I certification.
SWIFTWATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN- UNIT I certification was developed by Rescue 3 International and is considered the premier water rescue-training program. Rescue 3’s water rescue program allow agencies to meet the training requirements of NFPA’s 1670. This course is an intensive three-day, 26-hour class. The initial emphasis is to assure the safety of the rescuer. The first eight hours of class will be spent in the classroom covering fundamental water rescue information as well as technical rope applications. The next two days will be spent on the Nantahala River covering topics such as self-rescue, boat handling, shallow water crossing, offensive/defensive swimming and specific equipment applications.
Registration: The materials and equipment fee for SRT-I is $150.00. If you are already SRT-1, the recertification/upgrade fee is $65.00 per person; Recerts - do not forget your whistle. In addition, Recerts will need to bring their own equipment, (PFD, helmet & throwbag, or an additional $15.00 equipment user fee will be charged). An additional cost of $55.00 per student is required, if you are not a member of a volunteer or paid Emergency Services Personnel Department. The fee includes a Rescue 3 student manual, certificate, patch, whistle and ID card. The fee also includes equipment use of helmets; PFD, throwbag and other required technical equipment during the class. Please fill out the registration form and send it with a check, made payable to Darren Ledford, no later than August 25 so that we can order the books. If the class is cancelled or you cancel two weeks before the course, you will receive a full refund.
EQUIPMENT:
You will need the following;
A full wetsuit (5mm thickness or better) or a dry suit
Suitable foot ware such as booties, tennis shoes or river shoes and two pair of wool or poly socks. No open toed shoes!
Wetsuit or water sports gloves
Rain Gear
Note! - The water temperature is around 47 degrees so thermal protection is a must.
ADDITIONAL ITEMS:
For river days, you will need to bring a “bag” lunch and plenty of non – alcoholic fluids.
LODGING:
Andrews Valley Inn, located in Andrews, N.C. 1-888-777-7901 or 828-321-2176. * Preferred Hotel due to location & cost. The per night rate is $65.00 for double bed/double room. When making reservations, let them know you that you are taking a Swiftwater Rescue Course in order to receive a rate discount.
Sleep Inn - BrysonCity, 828-488-0326. The per night rate is around $95.00.
TIME & LOCATION: The Classroom session will be on 9/6 & 9/8 from 1800 - 2200 at Gaston College Fire Training Facility. Practical evolutions will be on 9/10 & 9/11 from 08:00am - Until at the NATAHALA RIVER IN BRYSON CITY, N.C.
