http://www.thorpe.org/photos/albums/collapsed/thumb_IMG_5378_final.jpgAPEX NC -- NCCERT members, along with participants from multiple agency's recently completed the NC Office of State Fire Marshal's Collapsed Structure Course. The class included breaching and breaking concrete, lifting and moving, as well as shoring techniques.
The class ran two consecutive weekends. Classroom time on Friday evenings, and practical time on the rubble pile Saturday and Sunday. The first weekend was dedicated to concrete breaching and breaking techniques as well as lifting and moving. The second weekend was dedicated to shoring techniques. For some, this was a refresher course while others were learning new skills.
The first weekend was a lot of fun since we were able to use a lot of different tools (fun toys), Hydraulic concrete chainsaw, circular saw, core drills, electric and hydraulic hammers, all types of cutting torches.
The second weekend was labor intensive with the building of numerous types of shoring, a Vertical Shore, Lace Post Shore, Horizontal Shore, Window / Door Shore and “T” Shores, Solid and Split Sole Raker Shores.
This class was important because it will expand NC C.E.R.T.'s roll with NC-USAR-TF4, during natural or man made disasters, structure and building collapse. Having this training will allow our team to work more effectively durinig these situations.
