Hurricane Preparedness Expo – Exhibitors Fact Sheet

RALEIGH – Emergency rescue and safety equipment used to save lives during hurricanes and other disasters will be featured at the free Hurricane Disaster Preparedness Expo on June 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Triangle Town Center, 5959 Triangle Town Blvd., located just south of where I-540 intersects with Capital Boulevard.

Co-hosted by the American Red Cross, News 14 Carolina and the Triangle Town Center, the expo aims to inform residents how to prepare their homes and protect their families from potential disaster.

The many family-friendly exhibits include:

· News 14 Carolina TV Chief Meteorologist Gary Stephenson, and on-air meteorologists Jess Torpey, Lee Ringer and Joshua McKinney, providing hurricane maps, advice, and live on-air reports;

· WPTF Radio Broadcasters Kevin Miller and Bill LuMaywill provide live on-air radio coverage;

American Red Cross Triangle Area Chapter (http://www.trianglearc.org/), providing hurricane-related exhibits and safety literature;
· Central Carolina Skywarn(www.ccskywarn.net (http://www.ccskywarn.net/)) will use a fully operational ham radio station setup, showing how it receives vital weather reports from trained spotters in 18 counties, then relays them to the National Weather Service in a timely and accurate manner;

· National Weather Service (www.nws.noaa.gov (http://www.nws.noaa.gov/)) will promote National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio; show instruments used to gather weather information, including a weather balloon; safely create small, controlled lighting bolts using a Vandergraff generator; and hand out activity books for children, tracking maps, flood and safety brochures.
<LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 6pt; COLOR: #333333">North Carolina Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief (www.ncmissions.org (http://www.ncmissions.org/)), which works with the Red Cross and other agencies following disasters, preparing tens of thousands of meals, will show a 45-foot long mobile kitchen and recovery unit with convection ovens, sinks for sanitation, and other food preparation equipment; <LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 6pt; COLOR: #333333">Wake County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (www.wakeares.org (http://www.wakeares.org/)) (ARES - the Amateur Radio Emergency Service) will allow children to talk on radios. ARES provides backup communications when other systems fail or become overloaded, through volunteer amateur radio operators working with state and county emergency management, agencies including the Red Cross, and utilities such as Progress Energy;
Wake County Sheriff’s Office will display all its programs which could be activated for citizens of Wake County during an emergency. The sheriff’s office also will bring its Canine Ambassador, Albany, to the expo, and provide information on handling pets during an emergency;
· Raleigh Police Department will have police vehicles on hand and will hand out safety and crime-prevention materials;
<LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN-TOP: 6pt; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 6pt; COLOR: #333333">Food Bank of North Carolina (www.foodbanknc.org/ (http://www.foodbanknc.org/)), a non-profit organization that provides food to people at risk of hunger in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina. The Food Bank distributes millions of pounds of food to more than 860 partner agencies including soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and after school programs for children;
NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine (www.cvm.ncsu.edu (http://www.cvm.ncsu.edu/)) will display its Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital and, with it, Dr. Kelli F. Ferris, a highly regarded figure in animal disaster response who was invited by Louisa State University to help organize the disaster response and treatment of rescued animals after Hurricane Katrina. The hospital is most commonly used to conduct spaying and neutering clinics around North Carolina. A second purpose is to travel to locations where groups of dogs and/or cats need veterinary care as the result of a disaster or suspected animal abuse;
· North Carolina Department of Transportation (www.ncdot.org (http://www.ncdot.org/)) will show how the traffic pattern on all Interstate 40 (I-40) lanes would be changed to evacuate coastal areas;

· Lutheran Family Services in the Carolina/Lutheran Disaster Responses (www.ldr.org (http://www.ldr.org/)) will show a compelling DVD created in Biloxi, Miss., eight days after Katrina struck and distribute literature covering basic survival information for families;

· Erie Insurance (www.erieinsurance.com (http://www.erieinsurance.com/)) will demonstrate the Erie Insurance/American Red Cross Serving Together Network, a companywide partnership that has been matching volunteers with the needs of local Red Cross chapters since 2000. The booth also will show footage of Hurricane Isabel to underscore the importance of readiness and offer tips how to protect homes and businesses from damage, particularly falling trees and limbs. Visitors will be able to register to win one of 25 tarps the company plans to give away in a random drawing.

· J&D Tree Pros, Inc. (www.jdtreepros.com (http://www.jdtreepros.com/)) plan to bring a 75-ton train crane that can reach 205 feet high to safely remove trees from homes or remove them for preventative maintenance prior to storms;

· Storm Education Team (www.stormstudy.com (http://www.stormstudy.com/)) will exhibit two large vans used to gather weather information and report findings to the National Hurricane Center radio room. Both are equipped with weather instruments and communications gear. One is primarily used to gather weather data, however, and the other is primarily a communications vehicle containing radio communications, remote repeaters, and wireless Internet equipment;

· NC CERT (www.nccert.org (http://www.nccert.org/)) will distribute family planning and preparedness brochures. NC CERT also will exhibit its communications vehicle, a converted ambulance, containing numerous types of communications equipment and featuring an “interoperability circuit” that enables communications with multiple agencies during hurricanes and other disasters. Trained NC CERT search and rescue dogs also will be on hand.

· SunCom Wireless (www.suncom.com (http://www.suncom.com/)) will be demonstrating cellular telephone technology, which can be vitally important during disasters if land lines or electric power is unavailable.

· Rex Healthcare (www.rexhealth.com (http://www.rexhealth.com/)) experts will be on hand to discuss how they would react in disaster situations and distribute health and safety print materials.
