Eastern SAR Exercise "SUCCESSFUL!"
FEBRUARY 20 – 22, 2009
The First Annual - “Eastern SAR Exercise” - hosted by NC CERT is now history!!!
Over 60 searchers from 15 agencies participated in the “live person” mock search. The search for two lost persons was conducted at Goose Creek State Park, Washington, NC.
COMMAND OPERATIONS: included Beaufort County Mobile Command Unit, NC CERT Mobile Communication Unit, Equipment Unit, Mobile Power Unit, Specialized Watercraft, and K9 Teams who were staged at “Camp Bonner” Boy Scout Camp, Washington NC. This facility also hosted Strategic planning, Staging, Mess facility, Cabins and Camp Grounds, Restrooms and Showers, RV and Vehicle Parking, and ample Rehab areas.
This search exercise allowed numerous agencies to combine their expertise in an extensive training scenario. K9 teams (tracking, trailing, and cadaver), along with ground search teams systematically covered the State Park. When clues indicated a subject had entered water at Mallard Creek off the Pamlico River, specialized Watercraft with highly trained Side Scan Sonar operators were deployed to cover the open water. Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Management Staff assisted with planning and carrying out their roles as they would in an actual emergency.
SUCCESSFULL ACTIVITIES INCLUDED:
Use of the North Carolina 800Mhz radio communication system in Beaufort County for a search and rescue operation. Teams used portable radios on the “VIPER system” to communicate between field teams and command. NC CERT, using their mobile communication unit with the interoperability system was able to include the local VHF TAC channel. All transmissions were simulcast on both the VIPER system and Beaufort County VHF TAC channel.
Search teams successfully located one lost subject then detected and located simulated remains of one deceased subject.
Successfully demobilized 60 plus, very tired and well fed searchers to their local areas. By performing this training exercise like an actual search from start to finish, participants are now better prepared to respond to Search Emergencies in their local communities.
NC CERT will take the lessons learned and start planning for the 2nd Annual “Eastern SAR Exercise” - 2010 Please watch our website for details.
THANK YOU TO ALL OF THOSE VOLUNTEERS WHO TOOK THE TIME TO TRAIN AND PREPARE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP OTHERS IN TIME OF NEED.
