NCCERT / NCTF-4 Members Attend First TEEX Specialty Canine Course

NCCERT / NCTF-4 Members Attend First TEEX Specialty Canine Course

COLLEGE STATION, TX -- NC CERT/NCTF 4 Team members along with other Task Forces and search managers from across the country and Canada attended the first Disaster Canine Specialist Course offered to state agencies at TEEX (A member of Texas A&M University), Disaster City in College Station, TX. The 50 hour course presented by FEMA instructors consisted of classroom instruction and practical applications in canine drive and motivation, canine directability, practical agility, focused bark alert, work in rubble, canines in confined space, lifting, mission preparedness, and canine risk and treatment strategies.

Search exercises were conducted on Thursday in Disaster City. The scenario was a tornado had hit Disaster City offering multiple complete and partial collapses. Operations began during daylight hours and continued into darkness. Students were divided into three separate teams. Each team consisted of a search manager, safety officer, medical, technical search, K-9’s and rescue specialists. The city was divided into three sectors. Each team was given only 30 minutes per sector to do a preliminary search, with each team rotating to every sector. Following the structural markings on each building as to safety of the structure, all teams conducted secondary searches. The secondary searches were limited to 60 minutes. Structural changes occurred to allow access to some previously inaccessible buildings. K9’s were deployed to search previously inaccessible structures after engineering deemed them safe to enter. Three live victims were located by K9 alert. All teams stood down.

The Disaster Canine Specialist Course offered a great opportunity for learning new skills and networking with other dedicated agencies. We highly recommend this course if you are prepared in the USAR system.
